Narcissists deliberately avoid answering simple questions, and understanding why can help you navigate interactions with them more effectively.

At first glance, a simple question seems harmless - just a way to get information or clarity. But for a narcissist, even the simplest question can feel like a threat. Narcissists have fragile egos that rely on maintaining control and appearing perfect. A direct question can expose inconsistencies, flaws, or weaknesses they desperately want to hide. So instead of answering honestly, they sidestep or manipulate the conversation.

One common tactic is deflection. When asked a simple question, a narcissist might change the subject, bring up something unrelated, or even turn the question back on you. This keeps the focus off them and maintains their illusion of control. For example, if you ask about why they missed an important event, they might respond with, "Well, what about the time you forgot my birthday?" The goal is to avoid accountability and keep the spotlight elsewhere.

Another reason narcissists avoid answering is that they often don't have a truthful answer.

Narcissists manipulate facts to suit their narrative, and the truth might not fit their story.

Admitting something straightforward could contradict the image they work so hard to maintain. So they may lie, gaslight, or simply stay silent, leaving you confused and doubting your own perceptions.

It's also important to remember that narcissists lack empathy, making clear communication difficult. They often don't understand or care about your need for straightforward answers.

Their priority is always themselves and preserving their ego, not helping you.

All these tactics serve one purpose: maintaining power. By refusing to answer simple questions, narcissists keep you off balance, unsure, and emotionally vulnerable. This confusion makes it easier for them to manipulate you and avoid consequences.
